Entering college can be overwhelming. UK's Living Learning Program (LLP) supports student success by placing students with similar interests in smaller communities in residence halls, helping to make the transition to college easier.

The Martin-Gatton CAFE LLP is open to all first-semester freshmen at the university, specifically those with interests in agriculture, food and the environment. This dynamic residential experience offers specialized programming, interactions with UK faculty and staff, and a supportive community focused on student success.

Why Should I Join?

Participating in the college’s LLP includes access to mentorship opportunities, networking with peers, LLP-only events and LLP-only sections of the college’s introductory course about agriculture and related disciplines. Students who participate in an LLP have shown increased retention and graduate rates and improved academic performance.

Students in our Living Learning Program enroll in connected courses, share study groups, have a peer mentor and live in Woodland Glen IV, one of the university's newest residence halls.

While all members of this program will enjoy the same benefits and community, some events and projects will be specialized based on students’ preferences and career goals.

More Details

The Martin-Gatton CAFE LLP focuses on four main pillars:

  • Academic Transition: Helping students navigate the transition from high school to college while developing an understanding of agriculture, food and the environment.

  • Values and Relationships: Developing the tools necessary to think critically, test personal values and beliefs and form lasting relationships with fellow Wildcats.

  • Community Engagement: Applying new knowledge, skills and personal values to understand the importance and benefits of campus and community engagement.

  • Professional Growth: Learning the important issues and needs that exist in agriculture, food and environment and what it means to lead as a professional in these industries.

Students in the Martin-Gatton CAFE LLP must enroll in a section of AFE 100: Issues in Agriculture, Food and Environment. In the spring, students may choose from a menu of connected courses that are relevant to their interests and career goals.

Living in the Martin-Gatton CAFE LLP will help you make connections and friendships within the college that will serve you all four years.
