In a fast-changing world, international experiences prepare students for success as global leaders. Through education abroad, students gain intercultural knowledge, are exposed to new perspectives and enhance their global understanding while studying, interning, researching, serving or teaching.

With a variety of programs and partners, Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment students can find an opportunity that fits their goals, area of study and comfort level. We encourage you to expand your horizons and discover the experience of a lifetime.

Our Programs

We have programs for every major and every budget. Opportunities include study abroad, intern abroad, research abroad, service abroad, teach abroad and exchange programs. The UK Education Abroad Office works closely with advisors and faculty from every department to help students find programs that fit their major requirements and align with their career goals.

In our exchange programs, students can study at U.S. and international universities while paying their regular UK tuition rate. For in-state students, this can be an especially affordable and immersive experience. Our students have studied at Seoul National University in South Korea, Kyoto University in Japan, Maynooth University in Ireland, Lancaster University in England, Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, University of Leeds in England, Charles Sturt University in Australia and more.

Experience Spotlight

Jordan Colella stands in front of a view of a city

Jordan Colella, Hawaii

Human Nutrition | Nicholasville, Ky.

Studying away from UK’s campus doesn’t have to mean going outside the United States. Jordan Colella had an incredible experience on a department-led trip to Hawaii.

One of several study away options through the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, the two-week trip takes students to two Hawaiian islands — Oahu and Hawai’i — because one is the state's highest-rated island in health outcomes, while the other is the lowest.

Traveling to and studying in Hawaii showed Colella that the perspective he has learned isn’t the only one, which will help him as he begins pharmacy school.

“The Hawaiian culture doesn't necessarily see health as something to be done by technology, but rather as something to be focused on by the entire community,” Colella said.

Colella is so grateful for his experience and recommends it to any interested student. “You get taught something, but you also get confidence."

He also formed valuable relationships with the UK faculty members who led the trip and with his fellow students. Nearly three years later, relationships that were formed on a two-week trip are still impactful.

I think the biggest thing I got out of it was just to sit back and look at other perspectives and other cultures before I jump in and make a decision based on what I know.

How to Begin

First Steps Session

Before selecting a program, all students are encouraged to complete a First Steps Session. Facilitated by former education abroad participants, this session describes the ins and outs of program selection—from living arrangements to financial aid, course credit and more.

First Steps Sessions include an interactive video and an accompanying workbook. Students unable to attend in-person sessions may pick up a workbook in the Agricultural Science Center and watch the video at home.

Note: In-person First Steps are only offered when classes are in session.

Connect with a Peer Ambassador

Peer Ambassadors are UK students who have recently returned from an education abroad program and are ready to help other students begin their journeys. After you have attended a First Steps Session, email or chat with a Peer Ambassador at the GSC International Center Space in the East Wing Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. during the school year.
