Eden Shale Farm near Owenton is a joint venture between the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Beef Network.

Eden Shale Farm serves as a demonstration farm and hosts field days to give cattlemen access to the latest innovations in farm management.

About the Facility

Eden Shale Farm is comprised of 961 acres in Owen County and has been owned by the University of Kentucky since 1955. For over 50 years, the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment operated Eden Shale Farm as a research facility. Over time, operations became cost-prohibitive, due to the lack of proximity to Lexington as well as ever-increasing costs associated with agricultural research projects.

After extensive discussions, the Martin-Gatton CAFE and the nonprofit Kentucky Beef Network, LLC negotiated a collaboration agreement that provides for KBN to assume the majority of operational and financial responsibility for Eden Shale Farm, operating as a learning and demonstration farm for cutting-edge research into beef production practices in Kentucky. The university retains ownership of the property, and college personnel continue collaborative activities.
