PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
To complete the Horticultural Science minor, students must successfully complete 18 credits. All students must complete HRT 200, HRT 350, HRT 425, and nine credits of electives from the HRT prefix. Other plant-related courses may be substituted with approval from the minor director.
Minor REQUIREMENTS
HRT 200 Principles of Horticultural Science
Students will discover the history and science of horticulture and be introduced to production practices of the industry. Students will actively learn about principles of plant growth and management through hands-on lab experiments. (3 credits) Prereq: None
HRT 350 Horticultural Plant Propagation
A study of the principles and practices involved in producing plants by sexual and asexual methods and to provide the basic skills necessary for using these methods. The course will also focus on the interrelationship of plant growth, structure and the environment as they affect the ability to propagate plants by a specific method. (3 credits) Prereq: HRT 200
HRT 425 Controlled Environment Systems and Management
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to controlled environment agriculture (CEA), including the design, integration and management of systems used to produce high-profitable crops such as greenhouses and vertical farms. The course will explore key components of CEA systems including climate control technologies (lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, CO2 enrichment), hydroponic and soil-less production methods, nutrient management, crop selection, and post- harvest management. Emphasis will be placed on systems thinking and data-driven decision making to optimize plant productivity, sustainability, and profitability. (3 credits) Prereq: HRT 200
ELECTIVES
Students must select nine electives from the HRT prefix. Other plant-related courses may be substituted with approval from the minor director.
