LEARN THE HUMAN SIDE OF FINANCE

The Family Financial Counseling (FFC) program is a social science degree for students interested in helping individuals and families improve their lives and financial well-being.

The FFC program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and real-world experiences needed to positively impact economic and financial decision making of individuals and families. You will learn how to utilize knowledge in personal finance and financial counseling to help individuals and families improve their overall economic well-being and financial security.

During your journey in the FFC program, you will learn how to provide personal and family financial counseling. You will gain knowledge and skills in financial literacy and education, financial management, consumer advocacy and protection, and consumer and financial behavior analysis. Because our customizable undergraduate degree program allows flexibility according to your specific interests, you will have the opportunity to add minors, certificates, or even double major.

Accelerate Your Career Into Graduate School

For highly motivated students, the opportunity exists to integrate up to 12 credit hours of undergraduate and graduate coursework through the Accelerated Master’s Pathways or AMP program. Students will save time and money by receiving dual credit for select courses taken during their senior year of undergraduate studies. Those interested in pursuing this path to a graduate degree should consult with their academic advisor.

EARN YOUR AFC CREDENTIALS

Following graduation, students can pursue the Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) credential, which is the highest standard of excellence in the financial counseling and education profession. As the FFC program is an Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE®) registered education program, our graduates are eligible to sit for the AFCPE® national exam as part of the process to earn the AFC® credentials.

Experiential Learning

In FFC, you will learn by doing. Our program provides students with opportunities to practice what they learn in the classroom in real-world settings. Motivated students can also earn certificates and/or minors to strengthen their degree program.

FFC 251 Personal and Family Finance

Students learn about personal and family financial resources throughout the lifespan, including planning, credit, savings, investments, insurance, taxes, retirement, and estate planning.

FFC 350 Consumer Economics and Issues

Students explore consumer issues, rights, and responsibilities for consumer services and financial products.

FFC 403 Family Financial Counseling

Students engage in the best practices of client- centric financial counseling and advising, developing and communicating financial plans that align with client goals and values.

FFC 498 Internship in Consumer Economics and Personal Finance

Students complete a semester-long internship such as providing financial coaching services in the I-RAFT clinic or through Cooperative Extension Services.

Living Learning Program

The Living Learning Program (LLP) supports student success by placing students with similar interests into smaller communities in particular residence halls.

Academic Enrichment

Our college believes in learning by doing. Our students are required to complete at least one type of experiential or hands-on learning opportunity, such as undergraduate research, an internship or an education abroad experience.

Scholarships

Thanks to generous alumni, donors and community partners, we have one of the largest scholarship programs at UK. Only one application is required for our college’s scholarships, but there are hundreds of potential awards.
