SMALL CREATURES. BIG SCIENCE.

The Entomology (ENT) program is an individualized emphasis area in the four-year Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree for students interested in insects, from molecules to ecosystems.

From the classroom to the laboratory and field, you will develop a strong foundation in biology, chemistry and genetics with a focus on insects. Our customizable undergraduate degree program allows you to develop the employability and technical skills needed for careers related to insects and their effect on humans and agriculture. With an emphasis on undergraduate research, you will be prepared for advanced studies.

During your journey in the ENT program, you will learn about topics such as insect biology, insect taxonomy, beneficial and harmful roles of insects, and how to manage insects — all from one of the top ranked Entomology departments in the world. Because our customizable undergraduate degree program allows for flexibility according to your specific interests, you will have the opportunity to add minors, certificates, or even a second major.

Careers

The Entomology degree will prepare you for opportunities in a wide variety of biological science fields in industry, academics, and government, such as:

  • Apiculturist (beekeeper)
  • Educator
  • Extension agent
  • Environmental scientist
  • Field ecologist
  • Forensic scientist
  • Integrated pest management consultant
  • Museum curator

GET INVOLVED

Opportunities abound for students in the ENT program. Whether you are interested in undergraduate research, gaining hands-on experience through an internship, or exploring the world of science through a study abroad course, the ENT program is sure to have an opportunity to meet your interests.

Experiential Learning

Hands-on learning is at the heart of what we do in ENT. Our program provides students with opportunities to practice what they learn in the classroom in real-world settings. Regardless of your path, we support students every step of the way.

ENT 110 Insect Biology

Students are introduced to the biology of insects with a focus on the principles of physiology, behavior, ecology and evolution.

ENT 300 General Entomology

Students learn the fundamentals of insect biology and relationships among insects, plants and other organisms.

ENT 395 Independent Work

Students earn college credit for conducting research on entomology under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

ENT 564 Insect Taxonomy

Students explore the practice of collecting, preparing and identifying adult insect specimens.

Living Learning Program

The Living Learning Program (LLP) supports student success by placing students with similar interests into smaller communities in particular residence halls.

Academic Enrichment

Our college believes in learning by doing. Our students are required to complete at least one type of experiential or hands-on learning opportunity, such as undergraduate research, an internship or an education abroad experience.

Scholarships

Thanks to generous alumni, donors and community partners, we have one of the largest scholarship programs at UK. Only one application is required for our college’s scholarships, but there are hundreds of potential awards.
