The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Family Sciences (FAM) degree prepares students for science and evidence-based practices to advance individual, family, and community health and wellbeing.

In the PhD program, you’ll gain the knowledge and skills to address complex issues affecting individuals, families, and communities. Through advanced coursework, applied research, and practical experiences, you’ll learn to analyze individual and relational development, family dynamics, design evidence-based interventions, and promote wellbeing while focusing on child and adolescent development, family finance and economics, or family processes. 

This research-intensive program is tailored to each student’s interests and career goals and is developed in consultation with a faculty advisory committee. Students must demonstrate deep expertise in their field through the successful completion of advanced coursework and comprehensive exams as well as the presentation of original research in a scholarly dissertation. 

As a PhD student, you’ll collaborate with faculty experts, engage in interdisciplinary research, and connect with professionals across human services disciplines. You’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers in academia, research, program evaluation, or family and community service fields.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Ready to apply? Start by contacting the Director of Graduate Studies for the program of interest to learn about specific requirements. To be eligible, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited U.S. institution or recognized foreign institution, have a bachelor’s GPA of at least 2.75 on 4.0 scale, a 3.0 on all graduate work, and proof of English language proficiency. A MS degree in a relevant discipline is expected, although exceptional post-baccalaureate applicants will be considered.

As a PhD student, you’ll have access to outstanding research facilities such as the Adolescent Development Lab and the Individual, Relationship, and Family Therapy (I-RAFT) Clinic. These units offer hands-on experiences in child and adolecent development, family dynamics, and intervention design, helping you build the connections and skills needed to make meaningful impact on the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
