The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Entomology (ENT) degree prepares students to innovate at the intersection of insect science, agriculture, and health, driving solutions that protect crops, ecosystems, and communities.

In the PhD program, you’ll tackle pressing agricultural and ecological challenges through advanced coursework, immersive fieldwork, and impactful research. By integrating insect science with agricultural systems and One Health principles, you’ll develop solutions that protect crops, livestock, and human health while promoting environmental sustainability.

This research-intensive program is tailored to each student’s interests and career goals and is developed in consultation with a faculty advisory committee. Students must demonstrate deep expertise in their field through the successful completion of advanced coursework and comprehensive exams as well as the presentation of original research in a scholarly dissertation.

As a PhD student, you’ll collaborate across disciplines, engage with agricultural and public health stakeholders, and contribute to research that strengthens food systems and ecosystem resilience, preparing you to lead in a wide range of agricultural, environmental, and health-related careers.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Ready to apply? Start by contacting the Director of Graduate Studies for the program of interest to learn about specific requirements. To be eligible, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited U.S. institution or recognized foreign institution, have a bachelor’s GPA of at least 3.0 on 4.0 scale, a 3.25 on all graduate work, and proof of English language proficiency. A MS degree in a relevant discipline is expected.

RESEARCH FACILITIES

As a PhD student, you’ll have access to state-of-the art research facilities with specialized laboratories for studying insect molecular biology, physiology and genetics; insect behavior, ecology, evolution, and systematics; or pest management and applied ecology. You’ll have opportunities to apply advanced techniques in real-world settings at university farms and forests and will have access to an extensive insect collection of nearly 1 million pinned specimens, supporting work in taxonomy, biodiversity, and systematics.
