In the PhD program, you’ll develop the analytical and economic expertise needed to address complex issues in agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural development. Through advanced coursework, applied research, and real-world problem solving, you’ll gain the skills to inform policy, guide agribusiness decisions, and support sustainable development. 

This research-intensive program is tailored to each student’s interests and career goals and is developed in consultation with a faculty advisory committee. Students must demonstrate deep expertise in their field through the successful completion of advanced coursework and comprehensive exams as well as the presentation of original research in a scholarly dissertation. 

As a PhD student, you’ll collaborate with faculty experts, engage in interdisciplinary research, and connect with stakeholders working in food systems, agricultural policy, and community economic development. You’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers in Cooperative Extension, government, industry, or international development.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Ready to apply? Start by contacting the Director of Graduate Studies for the program of interest to learn about specific requirements. To be eligible, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited U.S. institution or recognized foreign institution, have a bachelor’s GPA of at least 2.8 on 4.0 scale, a 3.2 on all graduate work, and proof of English language proficiency. Pre-program requirements include the completion of a two-course sequence in calculus, a course in statistics theory, and a MS level course in microeconomic theory. A MS degree in a relevant discipline is generally required. You are required to provide your GRE scores for admission.
